If you go on HealthCare.gov prior to that, you’ll have the option to create an account — complete with your personal data — and then log back into it between November 1 and December 15, when you’re ready to enroll in a plan. You’ll also be able to see what health insurance would have cost you in 2018 (including premium subsidies if you’re eligible for them), and see which insurers are offering plans in your area. In several states, additional insurers are joining the exchanges for 2019 though, so you may see more options available once the 2019 rates are loaded into the system. That typically happens around October 25 on HealthCare.gov.
That’s great, Accidental FIRE. Always good to be aware of options. As far as Aetna goes, I think that is a great place to get coverage through. I’m looking forward to seeing what the combo with CVS will evolve into (I’m picturing expanded roles for minuteclinics, etc) which may provide better options for quality and efficient care at affordable prices. Healthcare pain. I have a healthy family and we hardly ever go to the doctor. I cover my family through a regular plan through my work with a $3000 out of pocket max per year. Out of the complete blue sky my daughter had a sudden and major health crisis requiring hospitalization starting a month and half ago, this past December. So I blew through $6000 out of pocket in two months by meeting out of pocket for both 2017 and 2018 for one family member. Still would have to meet up to an extra $3000 out of pocket this year to get coverage of anyone else in the family, and also–icing on this cake–I might change jobs shortly, with a new health plan, re-setting all the deductibles to zero. 🙁 This stuff can really wallop you bad. So if you get a very high deductible CAT plan, just realize that if your health problem stretches across two calendar years, you’re going to pay DOUBLE.
I do mention in my commentary at the end of the post (and comments beneath the post) that health sharing ministries are an option we’ll be exploring. It wasn’t detailed because that’s a current option and has been for many years. This post was written to highlight new options made possible by the recent Tax Reform. Kitces just published a great overview of the four biggest health sharing ministries. I like ESI Money’s post, as well.
The Australian government announced in May 2008 that it proposes to increase the thresholds, to $100,000 for singles and $150,000 for families. These changes require legislative approval. A bill to change the law has been introduced but was not passed by the Senate. An amended version was passed on 16 October 2008. There have been criticisms that the changes will cause many people to drop their private health insurance, causing a further burden on the public hospital system, and a rise in premiums for those who stay with the private system. Other commentators believe the effect will be minimal.
Coverage limits: Some health insurance policies only pay for health care up to a certain dollar amount. The insured person may be expected to pay any charges in excess of the health plan's maximum payment for a specific service. In addition, some insurance company schemes have annual or lifetime coverage maxima. In these cases, the health plan will stop payment when they reach the benefit maximum, and the policy-holder must pay all remaining costs.
Minimum Essential Coverage should not be confused with Essential Health Benefits (EHB). EHB is a set of 10 categories of services health insurance plans must cover under the Affordable Care Act in order to be offered on the Marketplace. These include doctors’ services, inpatient and outpatient hospital care, prescription drug coverage, pregnancy and childbirth, mental health services, and more. Consumers who are unable to afford ACA-compliant coverage can now purchase short-term coverage with a much longer duration. Federal regulation changes finalized this summer and announced this month will make it possible for many buyers to purchase a short-term plan with an initial duration of nearly a year – with renewal options that allow the plan to remain in force for three years.
